Redact a passport copy before you send it

Hotels, employers and online services sometimes ask for a passport copy. A full copy with your number and machine-readable zone is a gift to identity thieves. Re-Doc reads the scan or photo, finds the passport number, personal number, date of birth and the two machine-readable lines, and blacks out what you do not need to share.

Example

What Re-Doc changes

Orange boxes are what Re-Doc finds on its own. Scans and photos get permanent black boxes burned into the image.

Checklist

What to remove, and what to keep

Usually removed

  • Passport and personal numbers: the core identifiers
  • Machine-readable zone (MRZ): the two lines at the bottom repeat everything
  • Date and place of birth: often not needed by the requester
  • Signature: if you draw a box over it in the editor

Usually kept

  • Name and photo, if the requester needs to verify you
  • Nationality and expiry date
  • The image itself
Tip

Add a written note such as "Copy for hotel check-in only" on your copy too. It makes misuse of a leaked copy harder.

How it works

Three steps

  1. STEP 1

    Upload

PDF, Word, TXT, scan or photo, up to 50 MB. Sign in with Google; the first 10 pages are free.

  2. STEP 2

    Review

Re-Doc highlights every change. On scans you can add or remove boxes; for any file you can describe what to keep or remove in plain words.

  3. STEP 3

    Download

Get the safe copy in the same format you uploaded, with the layout unchanged.

Frequently asked questions

01Should I redact my passport number?
If the requester only needs to confirm your name and nationality, yes. Some services must see the number, so ask first.
02Does it catch the MRZ lines?
The MRZ is read as text by OCR and treated as sensitive. Always check the result and draw an extra box if needed.
03Which files work?
Photos (JPG, PNG, WebP and more) and scanned PDFs, up to 50 MB.
04Is the passport photo removed?
If you need the photo hidden, draw a box over it in the editor before downloading, and check the result.
