Redact a driver's license copy

A driver's license copy is often requested to prove identity or age. The license number, full date of birth and home address are what make a copy risky. Re-Doc reads the photo or scan and blacks out those fields so you can share only what is needed.

Example

What Re-Doc changes

Orange boxes are what Re-Doc finds on its own. Scans and photos get permanent black boxes burned into the image.

Checklist

What to remove, and what to keep

Usually removed

  • License number: the main identifier
  • Full date of birth: unless age must be shown
  • Home address: rarely needed by the requester
  • Document discriminator and barcode text: they can identify the card

Usually kept

  • Name and photo, when identity must be confirmed
  • Expiry date and license class
  • The image layout
Tip

Barcodes on the back encode the same data. If you share the back, draw a box over the barcode in the editor.

How it works

Three steps

  1. STEP 1

    Upload

PDF, Word, TXT, scan or photo, up to 50 MB. Sign in with Google; the first 10 pages are free.

  2. STEP 2

    Review

Re-Doc highlights every change. On scans you can add or remove boxes; for any file you can describe what to keep or remove in plain words.

  3. STEP 3

    Download

Get the safe copy in the same format you uploaded, with the layout unchanged.

Frequently asked questions

01Should you redact your driver's license number?
If the person only needs to confirm your name or age, yes. Some checks require the number, so ask first.
02Does it work on phone photos?
Yes. Photos are read with OCR. Glare can hide text, so take the photo in even light.
03Can I keep my birth year but hide the day?
Describe it in a custom instruction, then check the result in the editor.
04Is it free?
The first 10 pages or images are free after signing in with Google.
