Anonymize a Word document and keep its formatting

Re-Doc anonymizes .docx files by replacing personal data with realistic synthetic values, so the document still reads naturally and keeps its styles, tables, headers and footers. The same person gets the same replacement everywhere in the file. You get a DOCX back, not a flattened image.

Example

What Re-Doc changes

Orange boxes are what Re-Doc finds on its own. Text-based files keep their layout, and each real value is swapped for a realistic synthetic one.

Checklist

What to remove, and what to keep

Usually removed

  • Names: in body text, tables, headers and footers
  • Emails and phone numbers: replaced with realistic look-alikes
  • Employee, customer and ID numbers: kept in the same format
  • Dates and places tied to a person: when they identify someone

Usually kept

  • Word styles, fonts and tables
  • Headers and footers
  • The .docx format, ready to edit
Tip

Word comments and tracked changes can also contain names. Accept or remove them before sharing the anonymized file.

How it works

Three steps

  1. STEP 1

    Upload

PDF, Word, TXT, scan or photo, up to 50 MB. Sign in with Google; the first 10 pages are free.

  2. STEP 2

    Review

Re-Doc highlights every change. On scans you can add or remove boxes; for any file you can describe what to keep or remove in plain words.

  3. STEP 3

    Download

Get the safe copy in the same format you uploaded, with the layout unchanged.

Frequently asked questions

01Why synthetic data instead of black boxes?
Black boxes make a Word file hard to read or reuse. Realistic replacements keep it usable for review, training or sharing, while the real values are gone.
02Will the same name be replaced consistently?
Yes. Each person or value gets one replacement used throughout the document.
03What if my Word file has images with personal data?
Multiple Data Types (Pro plan and higher) replaces the text and also redacts sensitive content inside embedded images.
04Can I edit the replacements?
Every change is highlighted and can be exported as a CSV list. To change what gets replaced, add a plain-language instruction and run the file again.
