Guide · sanitize a document before sharing

Sanitize a document before you share it

Sanitizing a document means taking out what the recipient should not see. Re-Doc handles the personal data in the content itself: names, contact details, ID and account numbers. Text-based files get realistic replacements so they stay usable, and scans get permanent black boxes.

Example

What Re-Doc changes

Orange boxes are what Re-Doc finds on its own. Text-based files keep their layout, and each real value is swapped for a realistic synthetic one.

What to replacePage 2 of 3
Checklist

What to replace, and what to keep

Usually replaced

  • Names and contact details: of people in the document
  • Tax, bank and ID numbers: kept in the right format
  • Customer and partner names: add them in an instruction
  • Anything else you list: in plain words before you start

Usually kept

  • The document's purpose and structure
  • Non-personal figures and terms
  • The file format
Tip

Sanitizing also covers hidden data. Before sharing, clear the file's properties, comments and tracked changes in your editor, since they can hold names too.
